porous structures
Where are we ready to break through habitual routines in order to become more porous to what surrounds us? What existing interrelations can we turn ourselves to that we would otherwise overlook?
In its 2026/2027 season, KlangLab once again brings itself into contact with neighboring artistic scenes, examining its own musical–compositional praxis through collaborations with practitioners from the areas of performance, visual art, and dance, among others. Perhaps sound, precisely as a medium, lends itself to thinking ourselves into relation across the assumed boundaries of bodies and objects. Performances unfold in the shared space between an audience and the performers, and for KlangLab, this means continually reconsidering how the two are positioned in relation to one another. Since KlangLab’s beginnings, its performances have taken place in various industrial buildings around Kleinbasel, whose spaces do not institute some kind of spatial order, but instead invite experimentation. To what extent can collaborations and processes of negotiation that traverse established boundaries within the arts help make performances porous to the perspectives, associations, and responses of the audience? At what point do possibilities for connection close themselves off to listeners?
Particularly in the context of this year’s theme, porous structures, we look forward to continuing these conversations in our customary post-performance discussions. Starting from the audience’s experiences of listening and seeing, these discussions offer an opportunity to collective reflection on the projects.
