Project with Robin Michel and Laura Mietrup
transmission line
02.10. + 03.10. | 20:00 | Silo 1 Tanzhaus Basel

For the piece „transmission line“, the Klanglab ensemble is collaborating with the artist duo Mietrup / Michel. In their artistic practice, the duo draws inspiration from urban structures and technological infrastructures. Starting from the hum of high-voltage power lines, as well as the electrical buzzing of transmission towers and antennas, they develop a performative composition embedded within an installation. Within this spatial arrangement, the ensemble embarks on a sonic expedition through the space.

Laura Mietrup (*1987) and Robin Michel (*1988) began their collaboration during their Bachelor’s studies at the Institute of Art in Basel. They created installation works both as a duo and as part of larger collectives.

After graduating, both pursued their own artistic practices for several years. While Mietrup focused on large-scale installations and sculptures, Michel’s work centred on sound-based works, instrument development and audiovisual performances. During this time, they regularly supported each other in their respective projects. Mietrup, for example, designed the costumes for Michel’s composition Fluchtpunkt, while Michel contributed compositions to Mietrup’s solo exhibitions Blurred at Kunsthalle Arbon and Zimmermannhaus Brugg.

Their first joint exhibition, Basement Hum, presented at Ausstellungsraum Klingental in Basel, brought together their respective artistic interests in a single, unified installation. The project also included two newly developed sound performances. Most recently, they were awarded a four-month studio residency by the Landis & Gyr Foundation in Budapest.

As an artist duo, Mietrup and Michel combine their distinct skills to create interdisciplinary works at the intersection of visual, auditory and performative art.
