Zacarias Maia, Percussion/Performance

As a Basel-based multidisciplinary musician specializing in contemporary music, free improvisation, and music theater, Zacarias Maia has performed across Europe, Israel, and South America.

Actively engaged in the contemporary music scene with a focus on creating new pieces, he has collaborated with composers such as Peter Ablinger, Pierluigi Billone, David Lang, Mark Andre, Cathy van Eck, Andrea Neumann, Daniel Ott, and Georges Aperghis.

He has performed at various venues, including Pirelli Hangar Biccoca in Milan, Tinguely Museum in Basel, Konzerthaus Berlin, Theater Basel, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Sala São Paulo, RSI-Lugano, Kunstmuseum Basel, Gare du Nord, and Petit Palais in Paris.

At the Hochschule für Musik Basel, he earned a Master’s degree with distinction in Percussion Performance under Christian Dierstein, completed a supplementary year in composition under Johannes Kreidler, and another in free improvisation under Andrea Neumann. Zacarias Maia also participated in an intensive summer theater course at the École Jacques Lecoq in Paris.

Currently, he is focused on developing performative pieces and serves as the artistic director of the KlangLab Ensemble Basel.
