Projekt mit Anna Sowa + Matheus Leston

27.9. + 28.9. | M54 Basel

The inspiration for the piece was the desire to show the value of an encounter: with oneself, with another person, with a group. Hence, there are both instrumental, visual and theatrical elements in the piece. The piece as interpreted is open to the audience. For me personally, it is significant because it contains elements of integration with the audience/listeners (a first in my work), but without requiring any additional action from the audience, just being.
For this new and extended version of the piece, created in collaboration with Brazilian artist Matheus Leston, lights become an integral part of the performance. New layers of encounters are now explored: between sound and visuals, between the body and the space, between perceiving and transforming reality.

Anna Sowa, Anna Sowa (1987, PL)

I am a composer and artist residing in Basel, mainly focused on exploring instrumental, electronic music with elements of the performing arts fields. I am interested in artistic activities that oscillate between sound, movement, gesture and theatricality, seeking maximum synergy between them.

In my pieces, I treat the instruments as musical-theatrical elements and I endeavour to compose the bodies of the musicians consciously so that they are a strong means of artistic expression.

The body treated as an instrument is the engine, the energy to create new sound phenomena, which I try to combine in an unobvious way.

I focus very much on the musical form. I want it to be balanced, logical but at the same time surprising. More and more often in my works, I take up topics that I present at a distance through the use of sarcasm or parody. The issues raised are always important to me, but I deliberately want to present them to the listener more playfully.

With a high degree of objectivity, it can be said that I am inspired to create new works by social phenomena and situations, human relationships, both in the aspect of everyday relations, as well as in a global perspective.

I have written solo, chamber, orchestral, quasi-improvised pieces, musical theatre and one pocket opera.

Matheus Leston (1986, BR)

Musician and multimedia artist, Leston creates works that critically explore the relationship between music and visuality. He is the creator of Orquestra Vermelha, a band composed of musicians represented by shadows, both pre-recorded and live on stage, which has performed at numerous cultural venues and festivals throughout Brazil and Europe. He also created the projects Moiré, Menos, and Ré, which, like Orquestra Vermelha, examine the live music experience—one of his major artistic interests.

As an artist, he has presented audiovisual installations in various exhibitions, including Luz Æterna (CCBB), Caos e Efeito (Itaú Cultural), and Periscópio (Zipper). Additionally, he creates digital generative art through the series Pedra Pássaro and 256x256x256x256, in which a single system can produce infinite visual possibilities based on its internal rules.

Leston was a member of Patife Band, Paulo Barnabé’s experimental rock group, and has composed numerous soundtracks for advertising and cinema, including the television series Contos do Edgar. Nowadays, his work focuses primarily on experimental electronic music, using modular synthesis and programming to facilitate fully improvised live performances in collaboration with the computer.

Born in São Paulo and holding a degree in Literature, he also develops commissioned art and technology projects for other artists, brands, and events. His portfolio includes projects for Beck’s, Red Bull Music Festival, and Hermès, as well as programming for artists such as Hick Duarte, Fernando Velázquez, The Force, and Aya. He also created the apps generating the visual identities of the bars Matiz and Caracol, with the latter winning a Latin American Design Award. Leston also served as the creative director of Juntxs, Estudio Guto Requena’s Laboratory for Studies on Empathy, Design, and Technology.
